Two nights, one lake and very little on the schedule. How to spend a weekend in the quietest of the Kumaon lake towns.
Bhimtal rewards guests who plan less. The lake is large, green and calm, and the town around it moves at the pace of the water.
Arrive on Friday evening, eat late and sleep with the windows open. Saturday is best spent on the lake itself, with an hour on the island and a walk along the far shore afterwards.
Sattal and Naukuchiatal are both short drives away for anyone who wants a second lake, and the Folk Culture Museum is a good hour on a grey afternoon.
Sunday morning belongs to breakfast and the terrace. Leave after lunch, when the hill road is at its emptiest.
