Monsoon in the Kumaon Hills

2 April 2026 · Travel Guides · 5 min read

Cloud in the valleys, waterfalls where there were none, and hillsides so green they look painted. Why the rains are worth planning for.

Most travellers avoid the Kumaon monsoon. Those who do not describe it as the most beautiful thing they have seen in India.

From July the hills fill with cloud that moves through the valleys at eye level. Streams appear overnight on slopes that were dry in May, and the terraced fields turn a green that photographs never quite capture.

Travel takes longer and plans need slack, but the properties are quiet, the rates are gentler, and the kitchens lean into the season with pakoras, ginger tea and slow Kumaoni cooking.

Bring good shoes, a light rain shell and no fixed itinerary.
